1st day 2009-2010

Since I'm afraid I will forget by the time I actually have the time to sit down and write, I'll write a few sentences about today.

The day overall went pretty smooth. The day went by pretty fast too. On the first day, our 6th graders are so confused and have so many questions we stay in homebase (our name for homeroom) to familiarize them with the procedures at our school. I always forget how many questions they ask. They hear things all their life about our school so they just interrupt me all day long with random questions. I mean really is it life threatening that you brush your teeth this very instant?! That was one of the questions today. I'm like really?! They come to school not knowing their bus number, not to mention they don't even know their address, I mean really, how am I supposed to find your bus number if I don't know where you live?! I love their nervous-excitement. Their inquisitive nature sometimes frustrates me later in the year, but at first I laugh because their questions are so urgent. When will we eat lunch? When will we have recess? When do we get to go to "specials" or whatever you call them? Which book is our math book? What's an agenda? Where do we write in our agenda? What do we do if we need to throw up? Why did they put in hand dryers if we can't use them?

These are only some of the wonderful questions I got to answer today!

We started this new thing this year called ELT, Extended Learning Time. All teachers in the school have a group of students. They either teach reading in their content area or math. All the math certified teachers obviously teach math. I have a group of 9 boys! How fun. They were so excited the class was so small. They asked if they could work with others and ask each other questions to make sure they understood things. I was like um... of course (that's what the class is for!) They boys have lots of energy, even at 8:40 in the morning (first class of the day). I think it will be fun with them.

The rest of the day flew by. We went to the lunchroom to show them how things work, we went on a tour so they'd know where to go for connections, we practiced doing a fire drill, we went over hall and classroom procedures, we made name plates for their desks, and got to know each other. My homebase kids and I usually have a love/hate relationship. They get tired of me pretty quickly if they don't like to read or be quiet. They read the first 30 minutes of school and sometimes it is a constant battle. Other people like to talk and don't get to go to their lockers when most people do because they can't stop talking. Today I think most of the students left feeling better than they came in. They all said they had a good day, which is what I wanted, but I don't want them to think they can walk all over the teachers and not follow the rules.

Through the day, I saw quite a few of my previous students. It was fun to see MOST of them! I can now say I have taught students in every grade at the school. Isn't that exciting. As one of my colleagues said at the end of the day.... "1 day down, 179 to go!"
