Fun moments and quotes for the day

Here's me and Brooke after the meet last week. We were so proud of our students. We are biased but we think they are the best no matter if we didn't get many points!

Okay, so I have had way too many fun things happen lately and I want to be better about remembering them. Maleigh and I have started writing down some things that happen during our 2nd period/collab. class. I'll try to do more of it in my other classes too. Some of these students make me laugh way too much and I can't even begin to remember all of the things I laugh at during the day.

One girl loves to tuck her body into her jacket at recess and walk around like a mini-me. She rolls around on the ground and people just watch her. One boy hides behind doors to "hide" from me, but I watch him hide so it's not like I don't see him. Who knew 6th graders did this?

My homebase loves "What if" stories. I always have to remind them I don't play the what if game. They also try to ask questions at different points during the day when I have on a different "hat". They will want to ask me math questions when we are in homebase or a recess question when we are in the middle of math. This is the mind of a middle school student and I love it! Last week I wore my hair curly all week. Now, I couldn't do that in years past because the kids went crazy when it was curly. This year the kids reacted but not drastically. They thought I cut my hair and asked if I did something different. I told them yes. The next day they asked the same question I said yes. They said, "No you didn't! It was like that yesterday!" I told them, "The curls are in different places!" We laughed because they all think they can stump me with their questions. For a few days we kept getting on the subject of ostriches because a homework problem was about an ostrich and a hummingbird. Who knew a word problem would be brought up 3+ days in a row! We ended up looking up information on ostriches and talking about it in homebase one afternoon because it was on their minds.

One day in math I asked the students to solve for the area of a circle I had drawn on the board. Please know, I had already gone over how to find the area and showed them examples of how to plug numbers into the formula. We even sang a song about (pi r squared--- and how pi stands for 3.14). Area of a circle is actually a 5th grade skill I just review. I look over and one of my students is just sitting there with a blank look on her face.

Me- "(Student's name), why aren't you doing the problem? Do you need help?"
Student- "I'm trying to figure out where you got the 3.14."
Me- a sigh probably came out of my mouth first.... then I went through a complete explanation of pi and how it is 3.14.

Today I gave back a quiz they took yesterday. The same girl asked, "What does the X over the number mean." Sigh.... All this time she didn't know the x over a problem meant she got it wrong?! I guess I need to explain things like this to my students next year instead of assume they know what an X means. She also said she is having trouble figuring out where the numbers come from when we are solving formula problems. Say we are finding the area of a triangle (Area= 1/2 x base x height), she needs to look at the shape given and plug in the numbers from the shape. We have a lot to learn in 25 days!

I wish I kept better record of things like this. I love the things they say!

This afternoon we were walking back to the school from track practice, and a former student (whom I love dearly) told me someone gave him a titty-twister the other day and he has a knot there now. He was very concerned. He went to the doctor and the doctor said he was fine, but the boy was convinced the knot was going to continue to grow and he was going to have to start wearing a sports bra to track. Man he makes me smile!
