East Coast Trip Part Two

Day 6: Saturday, July 10th we explored Philadelphia. We went to the Old State House/Independence Hall. We got to see the sun chair Washington sat in and Ben Franklin couldn't determine if it was a rising or a setting sun. We even got to see where they signed some pretty important documents in our country's history!

Here's the Old State House building. Yes, it was raining. BOO!

Afterwards we tried to get out of the rain as quickly as we could. We had one umbrella. Daddy had a jacket and just walked in the rain. He looked like a wet rat! Momma would walk under the umbrella some, but she got frustrated I'm sure because I was walking really slow. Flip-flops are extra dangerous in the rain, especially on the surfaces on which we were walking. Well, I was walking along with the umbrella and I saw Daddy's feet come right out from under him as he was walking across a grate on the sidewalk. He popped right back up though, however, I knew it had to hurt because he went down pretty hard. We kept going though and went into the Constitution Center and learned all kinds of things. They even had life size statues of the people that signed the Constitution. Daddy continued to say his wrist hurt, but then it got worse. While driving to the next destination, he said it was hard to move his hand. We stopped and got him an ice pack. He iced it so much that day and night and the next morning he woke up and said it felt wonderful! YAY! We made it to Ocean City, Maryland that evening. Daddy has some relatives there, so we went to see them on our trip. We went to a yummy seafood place that night. Most of us had crab cakes. They were delicious. We stayed in one of their condos and they were so kind to us.

Day 7: Sunday, July 11th we were in Ocean City, Maryland. Sunday, we took a walk on the boardwalk. It is a few miles long with lots of shops and vendors along the way. There was even an 1920 something merry-go-round and other fair like amusement rides.

Here's a view from the pier.
They have a monument for 911.

I could pretend I did this, but I won't. Daddy loved this! I would have been screaming the whole time!
I have never seen a beach so crowded! There were people as far as the eye could see!!! I was standing on the pier and it was like this on both sides of the pier.
Day 8: Monday, July 12th we went to Colonial Williamsburg and to Jamestown.

Momma hurt her back from being in the stocks.

We saw some of the townspeople making bricks and baskets. Momma and I even got into a conversation with the editor of the newspaper during one of the street performances. He talked with us about all kinds of things. At one point he said the government was like riding a horse. You guide it where you want it to go. If it doesn't want to go that way, you sell it! Momma asked why he wouldn't just board it. He said, "Well, you'd still have to feed it!" I just laughed. Momma asked him what he thought about a second revolution. He said, "Well we haven't even had one yet, so I don't know what I would think about one!" They also had a little performance with Martha Washington where they gave her a medal for her and her husband's services to the country. Some guy came out of the crowd and said he fought for the country and can't work now because he hurt his leg. Long story short she gave him money. It was neat to see how they portrayed things that could have happened.

I guess I got a little busy with the video camera at Jamestown and didn't take pictures. I will have to get them from Momma. After seeing a replica of one of the boats they would have traveled on, I finally realize how miserable the 4 1/2 month trip would have been. I mean really, stuck in the dark in the bottom of the boat. I don't think I would have been one to volunteer to go to the new world.

After our historical travels from the day, we drove onward to Kitty Hawk. We got there, ate some dinner at a little mexican restaurant, and then took a NICE stroll on the beach. It was a little windy can't you tell?! Momma got cold and even put on her jacket. I laughed because it was probably 80-85 degrees!
As we took our leisurely walk, Momma and Daddy were attacked by the ocean! Their shoes were soaking wet. Yes, they were shoes and socks to take a walk on the beach. I also got wet, but I dried easily b/c I had on flip-flops of course.

Day 9: Tuesday, July 13th we woke up and there was water all over the floor. The maintenance men came to work on the air conditioner as we left. Ha... yet another problem with the air! We then drove a few miles to go to the Wright Brothers National Memorial. They had a museum and a little presentation about their endeavors. I was truly impressed with the guy that did the presentation. I've never heard someone do something like that so well! After that, we went outside to see where they took off and landed their first 4 times in December of 1903. Then we took a hike up a big hill to the monument. I was pretty impressed with how well the entire memorial displayed the feat of the brothers. They even had a huge field where kids could fly kites. Nice job park service people!
We also went to Cape Hadderas, the tallest brick lighthouse in America. In 1999, they had to move the lighthouse further inland from it's original location because the ocean was tearing away at the foundation. I felt like it took forever to get there as we traveled on the outer bank islands. We ended up stopping and eating at a little restaurant called "Down Under". Naturally it had an Australian theme. You could get a kangaroo burger. I don't really think killing kangaroos would ever be a job of mine! After seeing some beautiful water and lots of nothing for about an hour, we made it there! There was a 45+ hour wait to get into the lighthouse. We resorted to taking pictures instead of waiting.

Day 10: Wednesday, July 14th we finally arrived in Charleston and met up with the Rosbury's. On the way we kept hitting patches of awful rain. I closed my eyes so I didn't have to slam on my imaginary brake in the backseat. Yes, I have been told I am a bad backseat driver. Sorry. Jeremy joined us later that evening. Once we got there, we enjoyed a nice dinner at Antolini's, a pizza place. Afterwards I asked the kids with the video camera what they wanted to do on this trip. Most of them said, "Get ice cream!" Although I was perfectly happy with that answer, it was interesting they came all the way to Charleston to get ice cream!!! I love it! Rowan wasn't looking forward to ice cream though. He said, "Poopie" when I asked him. Hm...

Here's our trip to Baskin Robbins.

We found out Jeremy accidently got a room at the Holiday Inn instead of the Holiday Inn Express. They were literally next door to each other on the same road! Yes, there is a difference and I learned the difference from this trip. Expresses have a continental breakfast the regular ones don't. The regular ones also have larger space for conferences and meetings whereas the expresses do not. I just hung out at the hotel with the rest of the family until late so I wouldn't be in the room by myself for so long! I watched Aiden and Ethan swim at the hotel for about an hour and a half. What a fun evening!

Day 11: Thursday, July 15th we went to Fort Sumter. We had to take a ferry across to the fort but when Terren heard about a ferry she was extremely excited. What 4 year old wouldn't be, especially when she thought it was a "FAIRY" boat instead. I wonder what she thought. Would it have wings? Would people walk around in fairy costumes? Some of the Rosbury's hadn't seen a live palm tree either and were quite impressed.

Here's the Rosbury's before the ferry ride, nice and green!
A view from the fort.

Afterwards, we ate at Sticky Fingers. It is here that I found out my blues name. I grew up as "Pretty Feet Davis" I now hold the name "Pretty Bad Boy Lee". I find it quite interesting. Jeremy doesn't like the married name as much. I guess I was wrong in thinking I would gain nice new name when I got married!

We also went to the Old Exchange building and went into the provost dungeon. It was pretty neat to see some of the history of Charleston. We didn't do much else in the city because it was a short trip and it was extremely hot. We were sweating just walking from the car to a building. Momma even said her clothes were sticking to her and she's always cold!!!

The little ones hadn't been to a beach either, so they went to a beach after Ft. Sumter and the Provost Dungeon. We ended up driving home though so we didn't get to see how much they enjoyed it. :(

It was definitely a fun trip! We drove in many states, on many (toll) roads, saw many sites, ate lots of food, stayed in lots of hotels, and made lots of memories. Thanks goes to the rents for letting me go along! love you-
