New Orleans--- NOLA

Since I finished my masters, we thought we'd take some trips over the weekends. Our first destination was New Orleans.

We thought it would be fun to go see Marsha and Mary Beth, two of our friends we met through SuperWOW. It was about an 8 hour trip and was worth the drive/ride! I slept a lot of the way. I woke up a few times thinking we were on an airplane. I asked Jeremy if we were taking off. He told me it was just the bumpy road. :) Oh well.

We got there and stayed up late talking. Saturday we had a day packed full of adventures. Jeremy, Marsha, Mary Beth, and I started the day by going to eat. The place we tried to go to had a long line so we went to a little pizza place.

Then Mary Beth had to leave us to go to work, so Jeremy, Marsha, and I decided to take a street car to the french quarter. We got to wait for a street car for about 20 minutes. Once one finally came there were lots of people waiting and the car was PACKED. We had to stand so we couldn't see much so we got off halfway down the line. Oh well!
While we waited we got to see four or five street cars going the opposite way.
Once we got off the street car we just walked around and here are some of the things we found.
Marsha and I inside the Loyola sign. We stole the idea from some girls that were doing it as we were walking by. They might have been students, but we thought it would be fun!

Street car tracks
We took a walk through Audubon Park and got to see some pretty spanish moss on the trees.
After the park we decided we needed to eat a crepe. I hadn't ever had one. They were delicious but very messy. We forgot to take a picture of the crepe before it was gone! Mine had nutella and bananas in it. Writing about it makes me want one now! The lady working was pretty rude but the more we listened to her we realized she wasn't supposed to come into work that day so she was mad.

Adventure #1:
After a nice afternoon of eating lunch, looking at some beautiful houses/buildings, and eating crepes, we decided we better rest a little before dinner. We had already walked over six miles at that point and it was only 3. On our way back to the house we took a little detour and went to see the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary (NOBTS) campus and to see some of the neighborhoods that were damaged by Katrina. Some of the people never came back to their homes. It was weird to see a car at a house every once in a while though instead of at every house. Once we got back on the interstate we were almost at our exit and saw something CRAZY! We saw a whole line of cars going the wrong way on the ON ramp! They were turning off the interstate to go on the on ramp. We speculated why they might be doing this and it was not related at all to a traffic jam. A little ways down the road the entire interstate was shut down on both sides. We then say some people going off road into the grass through a hole in a fence. Marsha is quite adventurous and didn't give second though to going off road. It was HILARIOUS. I've never turned off an interstate to go through the grass, through trees, and through a hole in a fence. We came out in a park near her house. We had already heard Marsha talk about how people don't follow rules in New Orleans so this just made me realize how true this was.

Here are the Loyola University dorms. We thought this was so pretty.
French Quarter

Adventure #2:
Never stop or someone will find you and harass you. Good ol' James was the second adventure. He thought Marsha didn't want to talk to him. I even told him my name was Freddy. Doing that got him more excited because he said that was a boys name. Oh man...

The city at night.
We walked around the french quarter a long time. We saw some break dancers and then decided to eat. We ate at a cajun restaurant Marsha suggested. This time Mary Beth wasn't with us, but their roommate Julie joined us. Dinner was delicious. We had a crazy waiter that seemed extra lazy but Marsha said he's like that every time. We had to "warm him up" and then he was fun.

We couldn't leave without going to Cafe Du Monde for some beignets. This was my only request for the weekend. So before the evening came to an end we got to enjoy some fun conversation over beignets.

Real laugh or fake laugh? You decide.
Jeremy's picture of himself.
We realized we ate the beignets before we had gotten a picture. We seemed to miss our photo opportunities quite frequently on this trip. Oh well.

No worries though. We started taking pictures of some beignets around us. We had to act like we were taking pictures of ourselves while focusing on the beignets. Yes, we were desperate. Finally, we found the perfect photo opportunity. Some people around us forgot to finish theirs so we got to take some picture of the deliciousness!

Adventure #3:
After we ate our yummy beignets, we walked back to the car. Once we got in the car and started driving to the toll booth to get out of the parking lot. Then it happened. There were flashes in the sky and then all the lights went out. It was dark. The gate couldn't raise up with the power out. The lady in the booth couldn't figure out what people owed her. She started calling people and they couldn't help either. She said, "I can't keep these people hostage!" She gave up on people helping because she knew they couldn't do anything, so she went to the gate and moved the wood up and down and then pushed it forward and broke it! WOW! We just gave her some money and then left. As we drove away we saw how many places were missing power. About an hour earlier we walked down Bourbon Street and it was the place to be for many people. I can only imagine how wild it would have gotten with all the lights off. Some of the bands were still playing without any amps, mics, or speakers. I'm glad we were in our car though!!!

Sunday we got to have another yummy meal. This time it was at The Camilla Grill, the place where we tried to eat on Saturday.
